Russia and Algeria plan to strengthen partnership in various fields

03/05/2023

Russia views Algeria as a key foreign policy partner. The parties intend to cooperate in the energy, transport and agricultural fields, pharmaceuticals and education. The countries are also going to increase trade turnover. If we turn to the figures, the mutual supply of various goods between the two states in 2021 amounted to $ 3 billion. Last year, the indicator decreased slightly. But the parties plan to fix it.

Algeria is also actively developing the export of its goods to Russia. From there, food products are supplied to the Russian Federation, including fruits, textiles, plastics, chemicals and more.

And in May 2023, the President of Algeria plans to visit Russia and sign the largest contract in the history of relations between the parties for the supply of Russian military equipment.

Why is Algeria a promising destination for cargo transportation?

It is the largest country in Africa by area. The state has a highly developed transport system. Deliveries of goods inside Algeria are carried out by rail and by car. And most of the country's highways have a hard surface.

As for the international direction, cargo is sent there mainly by sea. There are about 70% of such cases. After all, Algeria is not washed by the Mediterranean Sea in the north. In addition, there is transportation by car and aircraft, as well as by railway.

What are the plans of these countries for the future?

There is another positive news for the Russian Federation. Algeria wants to join the BRICS interstate association, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and the Republic of South Africa.

Such changes can simplify cargo transportation between the two countries. This is due to the fact that the BRICS countries are discussing the creation of a single monetary unit. Thus, the members of the alliance are going to reduce dependence on the dollar for trade turnover.

The new currency will make it much easier to pay for the export and import of goods. In the meantime, such operations are difficult to carry out due to sanctions imposed on Russian banks and stricter requirements of credit institutions when making payments in dollars and euros.
