Interim results of the use of driverless trucks in Russia

21/11/2023

Since their launch, unmanned "KamAZ" trucks have traveled over 560 thousand kilometers on Russian roads.

Let us remind you that along M-11, for example, the movement of such trucks was launched in the summer of 2023. Since then they have traveled the route 24/7. Trucks stop only for loading/unloading goods, refueling and maintenance.

So far, these cars have performed well. These driverless cars are much more disciplined than trucks driven by people. That is, they behave on the road in accordance with traffic rules, do not violate the speed limit, and most importantly, do not rest.

All trucks  are controlled using AI, each car is equipped with communication, navigation, technical vision and incoming information processing systems.

So far, there are still people in the cabins, ready to take control at any moment. These are the rules of testing. But as the testers themselves say, they resort to this only in extreme cases, and mainly they arise due to other drivers and their behavior on the road.

What are the prospects for using autonomous trucks?

They are huge. If previously we only heard about cars without drivers from science fiction writers and directors, now it is a reality. Yes, for now there are still people in the trucks, and they hardly move around inside cities, but that’s why these are tests.

According to the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, unmanned trucks are the future of Russian logistics.

And this is not surprising. After all, there are many advantages.

Advantages of cargo delivery by autonomous trucks?

The first and perhaps most important is the reduction in logistics prices. Russia is a very large country. And trucks are used for transportation very often. This means that the salaries for drivers must be good in order to attract experienced drivers to the industry.

With the widespread use of such cars, such specialists will not be needed.

The second advantage is, of course, speed. A car without a driver does not need rest. The AI does not sleep, it does not need to stop, it does not feel hungry or tired. This means that such trucks can deliver goods much faster than their human-driven competitors.

The third advantage is safety. Driveless car comply with traffic rules as much as possible; it would never occur to them to overtake someone on turns or perform other dangerous maneuvers.

All this is only for the benefit of logistics. The cargo will definitely arrive quickly and in the best possible condition. It is clear that no one is immune from accidents, but the economic benefit will prevail here.

Conclusion

Unmanned trucks are performing well in tests in Russia. And considering all their advantages, it becomes clear that this is the future of logistics, and not only in our country. Road safety, speed of delivery, reduction in logistics costs - these are the advantages that such cars will bring to the industry.

So far, the tests have not yet been completed, but it is already clear that after some time there will definitely be more unmanned trucks on Russian roads. Cargo will always arrive on time and in the best possible condition. And customers will receive their orders on time. Isn't that the most important thing?
