How are Russia and Belarus developing logistics?

31/05/2023

Russia and Belarus are not only friends, neighbors, but also important economic partners for each other. And naturally, by developing trade, these countries are also developing logistics. After all, in order to sell goods to each other as well as to third countries, it is necessary to somehow deliver them to customers.

The development of the transport infrastructure of both countries has acquired particular importance recently.

The importance of Russian ports has sharply increased for Belarus, and first of all in the Leningrad region as the most geographically close. It is through them that Belarus sells its products to foreign markets. Belarusian vessels come to at least 19 Russian ports.

Taking into account the agreements between the countries, in this way Belarus transports petroleum products, fertilizers, metal products, as well as wood processing goods.

If we talk about how goods are distributed within countries, then cargo transportation using motor vehicles and transportation by water play a leading role here.  Last November, the countries signed an agreement on navigation on inland rivers.

However, for the time being, many companies still choose transportation by motor transport. The advantages are obvious: the routes have been known for a long time, the road situation is stable and besides, it is inexpensive.

In third place – transportation by rail. Historically, the percentage here is the smallest. A reduction in prices will help to correct the situation. After all, even tourists from Russia most often visit Belarus by car.

What products does Belarus supply to Russia?

First of all, food. After all, these are high-quality goods, especially dairy products and cheeses. In second place is technology. These are machines for agriculture and passenger transportation, as well as elevators for apartment buildings and offices. Most of the equipment is purchased by the Irkutsk region.

What products can be sold in Belarus?

Giant companies, of course, export petroleum products and gas. The country is also interested in buying machinery, fruits, vegetables, and food with a long shelf life.

So for businessmen whose business is related to logistics, the sale of products to Belarus can bring additional profit.

For businessmen from Belarus, Russia is also an opportunity to sell products to third countries. The same China, for example.

Result

Countries still have a lot of work to do in the field of transport and logistics. Both sides should develop transport accessibility, find new ways of logistics within the countries and remember forgotten routes.

But it is already there – this is a big plus, both for Russia and for Belarus. And besides, the development of relations between these countries has a positive impact on the development of international logistics, and hence on business.
