Experiment from the Russian Post: drones will deliver parcels and goods on 33 routes

04/04/2023

Work on the launch of deliveries has been going on since last year. But soon the Russian Post will expand the geography of unmanned aerial delivery of parcels and goods: even more routes will be connected to the test tests. This was stated by the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Vitaly Saveliev.

Note that at first 12 routes were included in the network. However, there are already 19 routes operating now. Now the Russian Post is ready to enter 33 routes. The company is going to conduct a test launch before the end of this year.

In total, 4 regions participate in the experiment: the Kamchatka Territory, as well as the Chukchi, Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrugs.

Drones are primarily used to deliver mail and cargo weighing from 50 to 100 kg. This is especially true for residents of remote and hard-to-reach territories. While the delivery of parcels to such areas is carried out seasonally, or with the help of conventional air transport. And this is economically unjustified when transporting small loads.

Drones also conduct aerial photography. This helps to quickly and accurately inspect important infrastructure facilities, for example, pipelines and power lines.

For security reasons, the drone routes pass outside of large settlements, airfields and venues of mass events. The flights are controlled by external pilots. They form flight plans, altitude and speed, as well as set route points. Automatic mode is activated only in case of signal loss. All this information is sent to the local aviation authorities.

In addition, GTLK has created a UAV operator BAS and is going to participate in the experiment together with the Russian Post.

By 2025, the company expects to bring drones to break even.
